Welcome to the Atlantic Environmental Sciences Network (AESN) "Meeting Place"

The "Meeting Place" web site is a communication and knowledge translation initiative of AESN that is designed to:

  • Introduce you to the Atlantic Environmental Sciences Network.
  • Provide Information on AESN events, meetings, and initiatives.
  • Promote partner interaction with communities in rural and remote areas.
  • Facilitate awareness of, and potential involvement with AESN R&D / training initiatives.
  • Enhance partner collaboration among diverse groups located over a large geographic area.

In March of 2008, AESN finalized a new strategic plan to establish an agenda and priorities for the next 5 years.  The plan is focused on bringing increased funding into Atlantic Canada and raising AESN’s profile as THE organization for research on environmental change.  It takes advantage of existing capacity in the region by identifying it and building stronger ties within it.  The plan includes strategies for better and more efficient identification of opportunities for research.  It also includes an approach to make more effective use of resources available to AESN.  By following this strategic plan, AESN has an opportunity, over the next five years and beyond, to build on the established foundation and significantly increase the funding opportunities to research in Atlantic Canada.

The AESN Mission

To facilitate excellence in cooperative and strategic environmental research, development, and training, thereby building effective partnerships and enhancing knowledge-based environmentally sustainable economic development in Atlantic Canada.

AESN Structure

Our new strategic plan highlights three distinct areas of focus, each of which is viewed through the perspective of environmental change

Organization Chart

Programs  / projects are multi-institutional and multi-sectoral. All projects have environmental policy and socio-economic components.

Application of resources to the focus areas will be opportunity-based.  When opportunities arise in a certain area of focus, the available resources will be deployed to assist in seizing the opportunity, recognizing that other areas of focus might receive less attention in the mean time.

The Goals

AESN’s strategic plan identifies 5 major goals that set out the overall direction and vision for the organization:

1. Identify or develop major projects to enhance the profile of AESN;

2. Establish AESN as the Atlantic Canadian Group that can facilitate, coordinate and inform on environmental issues locally, nationally, and globally;

3. Formulate a governance structure that enables AESN to fulfill its mission;

4. Strengthen the collective research and development capacity in Atlantic Canada; and,

5. Identify and promote research in support of economic development in an environmentally sustainable manner in Atlantic Canada.

Action items and objectives have been developed for each goal.
